Inspiration

I was inspired by an idea I had a few years ago when Bard by Google came out. I wanted to test its capabilities, so I had it argue with a GPT-3.5 turbo instance on my phone. This was just a simple manual test, but it's been on my TODO list since then.

What it does

GPT Duel is a platform that allows users to watch and vote on debates by ChatGPT agents in real-time.

How we built it

I built it using React for the front end with Firebase for data storage. My backend is a simple Python script that interacts with the Firebase backend.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge I faced was controlling the LLM output. Sometimes it would give me too informal whilst other times it's output would be too formal.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm glad I could get this running with minimal cost while keeping high quality output.

What we learned

This was my first project using the Firebase real-time database and Firebase auth. I plan to use this again as it was simple to do with my react frontend.

What's next for GPT Duel

I plan to add storage to the backend so users can view prior matches. Also, finding ways to get an active community and develop with user feedback are important to me.
