Inspiration

India lacks reliable internet and finding my phone on silent mode became a real hassle. Other solutions like Android device manager require internet on the device and require you to log in to your account on the finder phone.

What it does

On receiving a password text, the app sends the finder phone back GPS cords and a google maps link of the device location or turns up the volume and starts ringing the device.

How I built it

I built the app using java via the Android Studio SDK. I used XML to code the UI and used Microsoft power point to design the graphics.

Challenges I ran into

The GPS service would show users an old location rather than updating on every text message. This was a major problem since android gps uses a change in location to make a location update. I had to recode the complete GPS method to achieve on-demand GPS updates.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

The app has been able to aquire over 10,000 downloads and has been featured on prominent indian app review channels like Mrinal Saha and Prince Chandra.

What I learned

I learned how to implement broadcast recievers and use the MediaPlayer, SMS, and Location classes.

What's next for GPSMS- Find Phone With SMS

New updates will come with additional features like dynamic SMS password, black/whitelists, etc.
