Inspiration

We were inspired by the growing gap between local governments and the communities they serve. Town halls, budget meetings, and city planning sessions often lack easy access, transparency, and true resident involvement — especially for marginalized or busy populations. We wanted to build a no-code platform that gives every resident a voice in how their city evolves, using AI to make civic processes more accessible and equitable.

What it does

GovConnect is a mobile-friendly web app that allows residents to:

  • See and participate in upcoming votes and initiatives
  • Visualize city budget allocations and explore "what if" scenarios
  • Read AI-generated summaries of public town halls
  • Suggest new community initiatives and vote on polls
  • Discover local events and businesses to stay engaged with their city Residents are verified through a simple authentication process, while visitors can browse publicly available information.

How we built it

We built GovConnect using:

  • OpenAI GPT-4 API for generating town hall summaries and budget impact narratives
  • Bubble's built-in database to manage users, initiatives, events, polls, and businesses
  • Figma for designing wireframes and planning the user experience

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing a user-friendly interface that balanced a lot of civic information without overwhelming users
  • Integrating AI-generated content in a way that was transparent, responsible, and easy for residents to trust
  • Balancing resident verification with privacy concerns for anonymous visitor views

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a fully functioning prototype that enables real civic engagement in under 24 hours
  • Creating an AI-powered town hall summarization feature that makes government meetings more accessible
  • Designing a platform that is scalable across different cities, with customizable modules for local governments

What we learned

  • How to leverage no-code tools to rapidly prototype and launch complex apps
  • How to integrate OpenAI’s API effectively for summarization tasks
  • How civic technology can directly impact equity and smarter governance
  • The importance of building user experiences that prioritize transparency, trust, and ease of access

What's next for GovConnect

  • Pilot testing GovConnect with a local neighborhood association or city office
  • Adding more AI features, like sentiment analysis from public comments
  • Integrating open city data APIs to automate updates for votes, events, and initiatives
  • Building a mobile-native app version for even faster access
  • Expanding support for multiple cities and allowing city-specific customization by local governments
