Inspiration

Restaurant Operating System (ROS) was born from a simple idea: restaurants deserve modern, reliable, and affordable software that works even without an internet connection. Instead of building a hackathon-only prototype, I used OpenAI Build Week to accelerate the development of a real commercial product for GOTIGIN SOFTWARE & HARDWARE PRIVATE LIMITED, with the goal of deploying it in production.

What it does

ROS is an offline-first, enterprise-grade Restaurant Operating System that brings together POS, billing, inventory management, kitchen operations, customer management, analytics, and future AI-powered capabilities into a single platform. It is designed to be fast, reliable, and scalable for restaurants of all sizes.

How we built it

The core business engine is built in Rust, with a cross-platform UI developed in Flutter and connected using flutter_rust_bridge. Data is stored locally using SQLite, with support for future cloud synchronization. Throughout OpenAI Build Week, we extensively used ChatGPT 5.6 and Codex for architecture, implementation, debugging, documentation, and code refinement, while continuing development with additional AI assistants as the project evolved.

Challenges we ran into

Building a production-oriented system within a hackathon timeframe was our biggest challenge. We had to balance rapid AI-assisted development with clean architecture, maintainability, and long-term scalability. Another challenge was adapting our workflow after Build Week AI usage limits were exhausted while maintaining consistent development progress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built the foundation of a real commercial Restaurant Operating System instead of a demo.
  • Designed an offline-first architecture focused on reliability and performance.
  • Successfully integrated Rust and Flutter using flutter_rust_bridge.
  • Leveraged AI to significantly accelerate software development while maintaining engineering quality.
  • Created a scalable platform that will continue to evolve beyond the hackathon.

What we learned

OpenAI Build Week demonstrated how AI can dramatically increase developer productivity when combined with strong engineering practices. AI accelerated development, but careful architectural decisions, testing, and refinement remained essential for building production-ready software. We also learned that a solo founder can make remarkable progress on an ambitious commercial product with the right tools.

What's next for Restaurant Operating System

ROS will continue as the flagship product of GOTIGIN SOFTWARE & HARDWARE PRIVATE LIMITED. Our next milestones include production deployment, multi-branch support, cloud synchronization, advanced reporting, AI-powered business insights, and onboarding our first restaurant customers as we build a complete operating platform for the hospitality industry.
