Inspiration

“We should do that sometime” is easy to say and easy to forget. We built Gimik to help people turn those shared intentions into days they actually spend together. The idea started with a familiar gap: friends often want to do the same thing, but nobody realizes it or picks a date.

What it does

Gimik lets people discover activities or write their own “somedays,” save the ones they want to do, and choose who can see each one. When friends have a someday in common, they can send an invite, choose a date and place, and keep the conversation attached to the plan. Afterward, the plan becomes a record they can revisit in a private journal.

How we built it

We built the iOS and Android app with React Native, Expo, and TypeScript. A FastAPI backend stores accounts, activities, invites, plans, and messages in PostgreSQL. The discovery feed uses interests, saved activities, and social overlap to suggest what to do next. Ably delivers message updates in real time, and a Next.js site introduces the product.

Challenges and what we learned

The hardest part was making planning feel simple while respecting each person’s privacy. Visibility rules have to work at the API level, including when someone views an activity or sends an invite. We also had to keep the app responsive as it synced with the server. Testing on real phones exposed navigation crashes and data mismatches that were easy to miss in code alone. We learned that the useful moment is not saving an idea; it is discovering that someone else wants it too and giving it a date.
