Inspiration
We wanted to reimagine chess as a living, cinematic experience by merging timeless strategy with immersive augmented reality and expressive character design.
What it does
W(AR) CHESS projects a fully interactive chessboard into your physical space where animated pieces react with context-aware voice lines and dramatic capture sequences, turning every match into a performance.
How we built it
We built the experience using Google AR for spatial anchoring, Stockfish for real-time move validation and evaluation, and a FastAPI backend deployed on Railway to connect gameplay logic with expressive in-game reactions.
Challenges we ran into
Working with mobile AR frameworks proved unexpectedly complex, as spatial anchoring, object stability, and real-time interaction required far more precision and debugging than anticipated.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing a fully playable AR chess experience with animated captures and dynamic voice lines in a single day exceeded our expectations and validated the ambition of the concept.
What we learned
We learned that building stable, responsive AR systems is significantly more difficult than traditional app development and requires careful handling of rendering, tracking, and real-world spatial constraints.
What's next for W(AR) CHESS
Next, we plan to expand the personality system with richer animations, customizable skins, deeper voice interaction, and multiplayer persistence to evolve the game into a fully immersive AR strategy platform.
