Inspiration

We were motivated by the fact that 40% of Romania's population lives at risk of poverty and social exclusion, 56% of students drop out of school because their families do not afford the cost of school and 46% of the adults from rural areas don’t have a job.

On the other side, in the last few years, we saw that a trend among people from the urban areas is growing: to get connected with nature. From visiting the countryside, admiring nature, to the desire to grow their own plants, animals or eating the vegetables which they have personally grown.

We are also coming from disadvantaged communities and having such information, we immediately started to think about a solution that helps both parties involved. We will create an application that will allow the rural adults to have a job and increase their income, and the urban people will have the possibility to connect to our mother nature.

What it does

GoodFarm - Seed4Future offers a solution for both the farmers and people from the city. The application is creating a profile of the urban person based on a couple of predefined questions and then, he/she receives the best farmers' suggestions that match the created profile.

He/she can see details about the farmer’s profile as personal information, financial target, what vegetables can be planted in the farmer's garden, what animals grow, what fruit trees have on his land, or other rural activities in which the citizen may be involved. In exchange for a fee, a person living in the city can rent a small piece of land from the farmer's household to work with his family, e.g. cultivating their vegetables and fruits, or raising animals by themselves...

Besides that, the application offers the possibility to irrigate part of the land remotely, see how much money the farmer needs to achieve his financial target, and win NFTs that would facilitate access to multiple premium activities or goodies. The money raised by the farmer will help him and his family to have a quality life.

How we design it

We designed the application in a way that embeds modern technologies such as AI, Blockchain, and IoT. GoodFarm - Seed4Future also uses payment methods like PayPal or Apple Pay.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge that we faced was finding farmers that were willing to be filmed and involved with this. Due to the lack of financial and technology education in rural areas, it was hard to explain that we have a solution that would help them increase their incomes. We also tried to figure out what is the actual problem we are trying to solve, what it should include, and what is off-topic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Participating in a Hackathon program for the first time;
  • Designing our first application;
  • Developing financial education programs through the app to empower the users;
  • Using advanced and modern technologies;
  • Working as a team with persons we have never met;
  • Creating strong relationships;

What we learned

Throughout the development of this project, we have learned that through perseverance and determination, you can make a progress in solving problems that most rural families are facing. Along the way, we discovered the power of brainstorming and what is Mural. Moreover, we learned more about Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technology. We also realized that having good relationships with the community helps in times of need. For example, we needed them during our filming and market research.

What's next for GoodFarm - Seed4Future

Having the design phase done, we are planning to start developing it. We are looking for partners and sponsors to help us along the way. We hope to eventually reach a point in the future where the application will be marketable and start helping people. Having the application launched, we can help families in need from rural areas to grow their incomes without having to move to the city. Furthermore, people from the city can have a unique, healthy, and even educational rural experience for their children.
