User Research
Who are our primary users?
Our user group is neurodivergent individuals, particularly those who experience executive function challenges and rigid eating habits. Common groups include Autism, Asperger’s, Down syndrome, and the bipolar community. We believe Good Shelf has the potential to be utilized with the general population as well as members of the neurodivergent community.
What is the problem?
Neurodivergent individuals grappling with executive function challenges and rigid eating habits face hurdles with...
- organizing, planning, and managing tasks &
- adapting to big changes in diet, making it difficult to use up ingredients before they expire.
We reviewed literature online to help us learn about the problem domain and identify pain points. We learned that executive functions encompass the following areas: initiation, **working memory, **emotional and impulse control, **focusing, **hindsight and foresight, and **time awareness* (Neurodiversity and Executive Function, n.d.).
Common pain points of our users relating to executive functions include: procrastination, poor time management (inability to foresee how long a task will take), recall (inability to remember the specifics of a task), lack of internal prompts, and time blindness (Neurodiversity and Executive Function, n.d.).
Our Solution
Good Shelf is a mobile app leveraging AI to help neurodivergent individuals manage food waste. Some key functions of our solution include:
Inventory Management: Integrating with smart fridge technology, Good Shelf provides real-time updates on inventory, including item locations, easing organization challenges.
Food Expiration Management: Good Shelf tracks printed expiration dates and recognizes storage duration for items, helping users consume items before they expire.
Personalized Recommendations: To decrease food waste and allow individuals to use all excess ingredients, Good Shelf recommends recipes that utilize as many familiar, and “safe”* ingredients as possible.
Virtual Assistant: An AI-powered assistant enables users to receive tailored support.
Predictive Maintenance: Good Shelf reminds users to address existing or potential issues, helping with effective inventory management.
*Disclaimer: Good Shelf does not label foods or ingredients as safe and unsafe. When using the term “safe”, Good Shelf mimics the way its users often describe familiar, comforting, or non-sensory-triggering foods as “safe.”
