Inspiration
It originally started with the idea of a Bully AI, but we quickly realized that the AI wouldn't benefit students as much as a good friend would.
What it does
Good friend is exactly what it sounds like. It is an AI that keeps track of your progress, provides resources and videos for students to study, and it can also take information from a rubric or example provided essay to grade any essay you write for your classes.
How we built it
We started off by creating a to-do list that keeps track of students schedules and personal agendas.
Challenges we ran into
So, starting off, we didn't necessarily have a plan because, other than this being our first hackathon, we are also first-years with little to no experience, but we had a dream. Our motto throughout this whole event has been, "We came here with no PLAN, but we are leaving here with 4 GRAND." With our little experience, we had to heavily rely on ChatGPT and Perplexity to help us write the code we envisioned. We struggled with many errors that we didn't understand, having to use languages that we've never used before, and to get the outcome we needed from AI we needed to reiterate our prompt for the AI to understand. Through it all, those challenges built us as coders.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One thing we are very proud of is the fact that we never gave up. There was a lot of doubt and frustration, but overall we were able to pull something together, knowing that one day we can look back and be proud that we took the leap of faith.
What we learned
We learned how certain languages work together to create not only the functionality of a program but also the visual appeal of the program.
What's next for Good Friend
Good Friend AI is in the very early stages of development because all Good Friend is right now is a to-do list. We spent a lot of time on how we want Good Friend AI to be so what's next is to add the remaining features and expand on ways we can help students even more.
