Inspiration
We needed to find a way to help streamline all the activity in a city surrounding impact and social good. Many people would request to meet to find out how to get involved and plugged in into Austin's social impact scene. Meeting with everyone was not scalable, and nor the best strategy to put people into action and helping advance progress. We saw how people in the tech community use Angellist.com and Crunchbase.com to help identify and understand the startup ecosystem. They can find jobs, they can find investment, and they can find new contacts and get a pulse of what is happening in a city. However we did not need a non-profit directory, we have that already, and with close to 6,000 NPO's in Austin, having another index is not what we need. We need to help plug people in to cause that they care about and make it seamless. Using the Global Goals for Sustainable Development as a framework, anyone looking to find a cause they care about could go here and quickly find all organizations in all sectors who are working towards solutions.
What it does
This platform will allow you to understand the issues that are affecting the city, identify the amount of activity and organizations working towards solving those particular issues. It will then help you understand what they are doing in more depth and allow you the ability to engage with that organization.
How we built it
Node.JS, Bootstrap, MySql, Python, Sketch, Envision, Javascript, HTML, CSS, Webpack, Tableau Public
and lots of pizza and donuts....
Challenges we ran into
Determining what framework to build it on to scale up, and meeting the deadlines for the front end.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A great looking front end, great dynamic, and collaboration in the team, no big personal issues. Managment of expectations from the beginning was on point. Using technology for good.
What we learned
We learned how much more time we need to accomplish the most immediate steps, but that many more people want to join and help us complete the project.
