Inspiration
According to BBC News, Canada so far has given just over 1.39 million doses, which ranks 20 globally. The lack of COVID-19 vaccination knowledge has caused a significant social impact. The targeted demographic of this project includes young children, who may not be familiar with recent news and technologies. Hence, as the main goal is to spread such knowledge without making it too educational, we decided to create this shooting-the-virus game that is easy to get the users' hands-on, as well as showing COVID-19 vaccination-related information to the players through game features.
What it does
The intention of Gone coViral is to educate young children on the importance of COVID-19 preventions and vaccinations. To do so, we have created various features that demonstrate such. For instance, the ‘mask’ feature is a representation of masks, which will restore 1 health point (HP) and increase mana points (MP); the ‘wash hands’ feature allows shorter delays between each shot and many other features.
How we built it
Built completely using Java Awt.
Challenges we ran into
Communication is one of the issues we've faced since all of us are located in different places, as well as the difficulty of coding online that hinders us from working together at the same time. Another major issue we’ve faced is the different levels of familiarity with Java, so some of us had to learn on the spot. Since all four of us are new to the hackathon, it took us some time to work around with the software used in the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As all newbies, we are quite proud that we were able to finish this project in such a short period of time. Although we had to google quick tutorials, we were able to pick up materials quite fast on the spot. We also enjoyed our debugging process, since playing this game was actually quite a fun thing to do.
What we learned
One of the toughest coding processes was to determine how two items collide and make effects if they do. Fortunately, we were able to figure that out.
What's next for Untitled
We were thinking of adding new features for this game (ie. virus variant with different blood level, speed etc.) as we discover new issues when fighting through the epidemic.
