What's next for ごみの日ナビ — Gomi Navi

What it does

Gomi Navi (ごみの日ナビ) is a tiny offline app that keeps track of your neighborhood's garbage collection schedule — and reminds you the evening before pickup day.

Japanese garbage collection follows complex local rules: burnable waste on Mondays and Thursdays, plastics on Wednesday, non-burnable waste only on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday, hazardous waste once a month. Miss your slot, and the bag sits in your kitchen for another week.

The app turns those rules into a simple dashboard:

  • Next collection at a glance — what, when, and a countdown ("Today!" / "Tomorrow" / "in 3 days")
  • Weekday toggles — tap the days each category is collected
  • Monthly patterns — "1st & 3rd Tuesday" chips for non-burnable waste
  • Evening-before reminders — browser notifications the day before collection
  • Fully offline — everything saved locally, no accounts, no server

Inspiration

Every spring when the new fiscal year starts, the garbage schedule shifts — and every household spends a week confused about which bag goes out on which morning. It's one of the most universal small frustrations of community life, and exactly the kind of everyday problem software should solve.

How I built it

A single HTML file — no build step, no dependencies, no server. The schedule is a small data model (category + weekdays + monthly patterns); "next collection" is computed by scanning the next 31 days against the pattern rules. Reminders use the Web Notifications API while the app is open, and everything persists in localStorage.

I tested the schedule math against real calendar dates (including the current week), verified the weekday and monthly-pattern toggles, and confirmed persistence across reloads.

Challenges

  • Modeling "1st and 3rd Tuesday" cleanly — the nth-weekday-of-month calculation needed care (nth = floor((day-1)/7)+1), and the pattern needed to compose with the weekday check.
  • Making the schedule fully editable without overwhelming the UI — solved with compact toggle buttons plus month-pattern chips.

What's next

  • Local municipal presets (pick your city → schedule auto-fills)
  • PWA install + service-worker notifications (so reminders work even when the app is closed)
  • Shared household sync
