Inspiration

The streets we walk every day are often cluttered with trash — plastic bottles, food wrappers, hazardous waste. We saw this not as an inconvenience, but as a call to action. Inspired by local cleanup communities and our own frustration with environmental apathy, we created GoLoop : a platform to turn small individual actions into a collective environmental impact.

What it does

GoLoop is a web-based platform that helps reduce street waste by empowering users to: Join or create cleanup events in their area.

  • Scan trash using AI-powered Waste Classification, identifying if it’s organic, inorganic, or hazardous, and whether it’s recyclable or reusable.
  • Earn points for participating in cleanups and proper waste disposal.
  • Climb the leaderboard to stay motivated and inspire friendly competition.
  • Learn how to recycle better and contribute to a cleaner environment. By combining real-world action with digital motivation, GoLoop encourages people to make sustainable choices — one piece of trash at a time.

How we built it

Frontend: React.js with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive UI. Backend: Firebase for authentication, Firestore for data storage. Waste Classification: An AI-powered feature to identify and classify waste into organic, inorganic, or hazardous (B3), along with suggestions for reuse or recycling.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges for our team was figuring out how to inspire people to share our vision — that cleaner streets can lead to a more sustainable future. We didn’t want GoLoop to be just another app. We wanted it to change habits, encourage collaboration, and build community pride.

Another major challenge was preventing misuse of the points system, especially cheating to get higher ranks on the leaderboard. To address this, we implemented:

  • Manual validation by real people to ensure the submitted trash is real and relevant.
  • A focus on community-based events, so participation feels more meaningful than individual gain. Through user-friendly design and values-driven features, we made GoLoop not just a tool, but a movement toward sustainability — with identity, action, and innovation at its core.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Team Collaboration: As a team, we divided tasks based on each member’s strengths, and supported each other through challenges. It brought out the best in us — not just as developers, but as changemakers.

Bringing a Vision to Life: From just an idea to a fully designed and working prototype, we turned our dream of reducing street waste into something real that people can actually use.

Gamifying Real-World Impact: We created a system that rewards users not just for joining, but for actively participating in environmental action — making cleanup feel fun, competitive, and rewarding.

What we learned

Building GoLoop taught us how to turn a big idea — cleaner streets through community action — into a real, usable app. We learned how to design features that motivate users to join clean-up events sincerely, not just for leaderboard points. Technically, we gained hands-on experience with React for the frontend, Firebase for auth and database, and created a clean UI that works across devices.

On the non-technical side, since this was our first hackathon, we learned the importance of time management, team adaptability, and clear communication. Working in a fast-paced environment pushed us to quickly identify gaps, take initiative, and stay focused on our shared goal of building a solution that drives real-world environmental impact.

What's next for GoLoop

reuse communities. This will ensure that the trash collected doesn’t just disappear — it’s recycled, repurposed, or properly disposed of by the right people. We also plan to integrate impact tracking, so users can see the actual environmental difference they’ve made.

In addition, we aim to make the point and leaderboard system more meaningful. Users will be able to redeem their points for rewards, such as exclusive GoLoop merchandise or sustainable lifestyle items — creating a fun yet impactful way to stay engaged.

Ultimately, we want GoLoop to evolve into a complete ecosystem — from community action to sustainable waste management — while fostering a strong, purpose-driven movement.
