Inspiration

We were inspired mainly by the game Sort the Court and decided to take a Greek mythological twist on it; King Midas is our contender as he is often associated with wealth. We believe that financial literacy is a very important topic to touch upon since a majority of Americans are financially illiterate. Through gamification, users can become financially literate and have fun!

What it does

Golden Decisions is an online-based game that teaches you concepts of financial literacy. The user has to correctly answer 20 questions, ranging from varying concepts and difficulty in finance. If the user is ever stuck on a question, there is a guidebook that helps the user understand the fundamental concepts of finance.

How we built it

The site was built using React, Javascript, and HTML/CSS. We originally sketched out a rough design in Figma, where we recognized areas of functionality and understood the overall feel of the site we were aiming for. This helped our graphic artist decide on the design and overall vibe. We built the site using the React.JS + Vite framework, which utilizes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. JS was used to create the functionality behind the game, while React.JS was used as a combination of both frontend and backend operations.

Challenges we ran into

A few hours into the project, our dev team realized we dove into the idea without properly organizing our tasks and fully understanding the different parts behind it. However, once we acknowledged this, we communicated frequently on Discord and kept each other in the loop; this allowed us to ensure our ideas aligned with the end goal and ensured merge conflicts were quick and easy to fix. Another challenge that we ran into was being unfamiliar with the procedures of our choice of language. While we all have experience working with these languages in the form of other projects, this project, in particular, felt like a larger-scale project in comparison.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of bringing the entire project together in the short period of time we had. Despite the challenges we faced along the way, we persisted and built a project that we are proud of. The game runs entirely with a JavaScript script combined with React components. As a team with limited experience in these languages, we are proud to have learned and built something with these languages.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively use JavaScript and HTML/CSS to build a functioning site and how React.JS ties it all together for convenient site building. We felt that we were able to support one another as a team with our wide range of skills that we each brought to the table. We were each able to improve not only our programming skills but also our collaboration and technical communication skills.

What's next for Golden Decisions

As we continue to develop our project, our next goal is to enhance user engagement and retention based around gameplay. At the moment, we have a total of 20 questions, which means replayability may be low. We may potentially add more financial literacy questions in the future and get feedback on how to vary questions to test knowledge and provide novel experiences. We may also look into options to optimize the functionality behind our code and perhaps adding more gamemodes to truly test the user’s financial literacy. We are also looking into integrating the hints book as a proper GUI in the site, where users can interact with and look through the notes as if it were a real book.
