Inspiration
Golden Days began with a simple but painful observation: many older adults want to enjoy digital games, but modern apps were never truly designed for them.
Confusing menus, tiny buttons, complicated navigation, constant pop-ups, and endless advertisements turn something joyful into a frustrating experience. Many eventually give up—not because they cannot play, but because technology makes them feel like they do not belong.
I wanted to change that.
What it does
Golden Days is an accessible, ad-free digital city where older adults can rediscover classic games such as bingo, puzzles, word searches, and memory matching.
Instead of navigating a traditional app menu, players explore a warm, nostalgic world and enter each game as if they were visiting a place in their own town. Every interaction is designed to feel clear, welcoming, and familiar.
But Golden Days is more than a collection of games.
An AI companion stays with the player throughout the experience. It explains rules in simple language, offers guidance when needed, provides encouragement, and helps the player continue without making them feel judged or overwhelmed.
The goal is not merely to make games easier. It is to make technology feel more human.
How I built it
I designed and built Golden Days as an interactive web experience for tablets and desktop devices, combining accessible game design, a navigable illustrated city, and an AI companion—all within the limited timeframe of the hackathon.
The experience combines:
A navigable digital city instead of a conventional menu Accessible versions of familiar classic games An AI companion integrated directly into the gameplay Context-aware assistance and encouragement A warm visual identity inspired by nostalgic Latin American towns Responsive interactions designed around older users A completely ad-free environment
I designed the AI as part of the interface—not as a separate chatbot. It understands where the player is, which game they are playing, and when assistance may be useful.
Challenges
My greatest challenge was balancing accessibility with emotion.
An accessible product can easily become overly clinical or visually plain. I wanted Golden Days to remain simple without feeling empty, childish, or patronizing. Older adults deserve an experience that is both easy to use and genuinely beautiful.
I also had to make the AI helpful without making it intrusive. The companion needed to guide players while still allowing them to feel independent and in control.
Finally, building a cohesive city, multiple playable experiences, and an AI guidance system within the limited hackathon timeframe required careful prioritization and rapid iteration.
What I learned
I learned that accessibility is not only about larger buttons or higher contrast. It is about confidence.
Every unclear instruction, unexpected screen, or unnecessary choice can make someone question whether they are capable of using the technology. Good design removes those moments of doubt.
I also discovered that AI can become more than a feature. When thoughtfully integrated, it can serve as a patient companion that adapts technology to the person—instead of forcing the person to adapt to technology.
What I am proud of
Golden Days transforms a familiar problem into an inviting experience.
It does not ask older adults to learn another complicated platform. It welcomes them into a world they already understand, gives them the freedom to explore, and ensures that someone is always there when they need help.
I am especially proud that I was able to take Golden Days from an idea to a cohesive interactive experience as a solo builder—combining product design, visual storytelling, game development, accessibility, and artificial intelligence.
What's next
My vision is to expand Golden Days with more games, voice interaction, personalized difficulty, multiplayer experiences for families, and cognitive activity insights.
Ultimately, I want Golden Days to become a safe digital space where older adults can play, stay mentally active, connect with others, and feel confident using technology again.## Inspiration
