H1 Goin' Bunkers

Inspiration

With the situation in Ukraine getting more severe by day, we have decided to create an app for those in need. Goin’ Bunkers is a mobile app created for Ukrainian citizens and refugees, intending to provide people with useful information, including, but not limited to possible places of a bomb shelter in the capital of Ukraine, and locations of border crossings.

What it does

With our dropdown menu, one can choose from four options provided, depending on the one their interest. These options include a map of bunkers/ bomb shelters across Kyiv; multiple border crossings with Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania; important travel information and requirements upon arriving at the border; and lastly a map of hospitals in the neighboring countries if medical assistance is needed upon arrival.

How we built it

For this app, we have used Xcode, and Swift for coding, and Procreate for creating our custom app logo, and pins on the hospital and border crossing maps.

Challenges we ran into, and accomplishments that we're proud of

Looking for legitimate information sources would have been rather complicated if it weren’t for the fact that one of our team members speaks Slovak, which consequently allowed us to get verifiable data. Secondly, our code for implementing custom maps and for linking different websites with the app, wouldn’t work, but in the end, we have managed to make it work. However, the biggest obstacle was to replace a basic pin on the maps with our custom one. This task took us the longest time, yet once accomplished, it was also the most rewarding one.

What we learned

Since neither of us was fluent in Swift prior to this project, we have learned to code in Swift, find our bugs, and fix them, as well as, how to make custom pins on our maps.

What's next for Goin' Bunkers

We wish to expand our maps even further so that they contain not only possible bunker places in the capital but also other cities across Ukraine. We then would increase the number of hospitals available close to the borders, but also within Ukraine. Moreover, since this is a project that can be applied to other countries as well, we would wish to implement this framework elsewhere too, whether it is in countries ravaged by armed conflicts or destroyed by natural disasters.
