We were inspired to create GoGoGreen after noticing that many kids around us weren’t actually applying what they had learned about sustainability in school. Despite being taught important environmental concepts, there was a clear lack of retention—and that was concerning, especially because these kids represent our future. We realized that the problem begins at a very young age with the way sustainability is taught. Education often feels like a checklist rather than something meaningful, and we wanted to change that. That’s why we built GoGoGreen—an engaging, interactive web app designed specifically for kids to make learning about the environment fun and unforgettable. Our site includes three games: Trash Sort, Build a Green City, and Save Energy, where kids earn rewards and learn by making eco-friendly choices. We even developed an AI-powered trash sorter that uses a webcam to teach children how to properly recycle different materials in real-time. At first, we began coding on Replit using separate accounts, but quickly switched to VS Code Live Share, which helped us collaborate more efficiently within the limited time we had. We mapped out all the features, divided the work, and brought everything together using a shared navigation bar. One of our early ideas was to create a 3D application with flashy visuals—but we quickly realized that this would distract from our true goal: building a tool centered around the actual needs of our young users. This pivot helped us create a cleaner, more user-friendly design that better served our mission. One of our proudest accomplishments was getting the AI model to work in real-time—it took a long time and lots of debugging, but seeing it finally function was incredibly rewarding. Along the way, we developed valuable skills in game development and machine learning, and we learned how to break big tasks into manageable chunks and debug efficiently using focused testing. Moving forward, we hope to expand GoGoGreen to reach people of all ages, introduce new sustainability topics, add levels to keep users challenged, and continue experimenting with AI to improve model accuracy and interactivity through testing different AI models and hyperparameter tuning. We believe that GoGoGreen is more than just a set of games—it’s a tool that helps our youth build lasting environmental habits, starting young and growing with every click.
