Inspiration

I was inspired to do this project because I was having a really hard time keeping up with job and internship applications. When looking for solutions, I was only able to find a few (badly formatted) spreadsheets that didn't have the features I was looking for. Now, I can have my job applications spread out in an orderly way and I don't have to worry about forgetting to follow up while job hunting.

What it does

With GoGetEmployed, you're able to add job leads and store information like the company's name, the role, the job description, the job listing's URL, and miscellaneous notes.

You're also able to break job leads down into categories. GoGetEmployed has the following sections on the Job Leads page: Potential, Applied, Interview Stage, Offer Made, and Denied. At this time, the categories are not editable.

How I built it

This is a self-hosted Go web application that uses the Gin framework. On top of being incredibly fast, Gin is a great library and Go has easily understandable and writable code. Features that take advantage of Goroutines are planned after UGAHacks. GoGetEmployed uses Bootstrap 4 as a front-end framework and builds upon the SB Admin 2 theme. It uses SQLite for the database, but this is easily expandable as it also uses GORM, a full-featured object-relational mapper (ORM) written in Go.

Challenges I ran into

I had some trouble figuring out updating records with GORM, as I used a newer version with some bugs that are still Open on their issues page on Github. Now that I have it figured out, it should be smooth sailing for features I plan to implement. Also, creating the modal popups for the job listings was moderately difficult, but I found some great resources online for Bootstrap modals.

What I learned

I've definitely expanded my knowledge about Bootstrap and Go overall. Go is something very new to me, but I really like its syntax and speed. Also, it's not C.

What's next for GoGetEmployed

I plan on adding more features like automatic web scraping for creating new job leads, automatically pulling data from sites like Glassdoor and Payscale, adding a Contacts feature, finishing the Tasks tab on job leads, and setting up a notification API for reminders.
