Goat Together!

Inspiration

Goat Together! was inspired by something simple: studying with a friend. When you sit next to someone in the library, even if you are both working on different things, their presence makes you feel more motivated to stay focused.

We wanted to bring that same feeling of accountability to everyday wellness goals. We also noticed how much people enjoy things like Snapchat streaks and virtual pets, so we wondered: what if we could use that same motivation to help people build healthier habits with their friends?

What it does

Goat Together! is a mobile app that helps two friends stay accountable for their wellness goals.

Friends can create individual or shared goals, and some goals can require photo proof. The person completing the goal submits a photo, and their friend can review and approve or reject it.

As users complete goals, they earn coins and build streaks, which can be used to take care of and customize their shared virtual goat.

How we built it

We built Goat Together! using React Native, Expo, and TypeScript for the mobile app.

We used Supabase for authentication, our PostgreSQL database, Row Level Security, and photo storage.

We designed the app in Figma and created custom graphics and illustrations to give the app a warm, playful look.

We also used AI throughout development to help us learn unfamiliar technologies, understand errors, debug code, and move faster during the hackathon.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was getting the photo verification system working correctly.

We needed to make sure that the person assigned to a goal could submit a photo, while only the friend who created the goal could approve or reject it. This meant working through database relationships and Supabase RLS policies.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to build a full-stack mobile app from scratch during the hackathon.

We're especially proud of our photo verification system because it makes the accountability between friends feel more real than simply checking off your own goal.

We're also proud of the visual design and the shared goat system. We wanted the app to feel fun and cozy instead of feeling like another boring productivity app.

What we learned

We learned a lot about React Native, Expo, Supabase, PostgreSQL, RLS, database relationships, and mobile UI design.

Most importantly, we learned how to take an idea, divide up the work, and turn it into a working product under a tight deadline.
