Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the growing need for authentic career guidance among university students. We noticed that traditional methods, such as career fairs and networking events, often fail to provide a realistic view of various occupations in different companies. This gap in the market drove us to create a platform that offers immersive and engaging insights into different career roles.

What it does

It's an app that mainly provides students with short-form content about various companies. It features:

  • Company Videos: Short, engaging videos created by companies to showcase their culture and work environment.
  • Interactive Experiences: 'Day in the life' simulations allowing students to explore what it’s like to work in specific roles at different companies.
  • Personalized Content: A recommender system that uses tags associated with user profiles and company data (such as industry, size, and location) to match users with relevant content and companies.

This setup helps students gain realistic insights into potential career paths and company cultures, aiding them in making informed career decisions.

How we built it

We built the front-end using .NET and the backend with Python.

Challenges we ran into

.NET is a new framework to understand, along with the conceptualization of a reliable recommender system. The initial ideation of the project was also difficult. We originally aimed for an AR/Game that would lean towards the immersive and interactive aspects of the product. The difficulty of the project and the look of a game made within that time would not be very presentable, so we opted out of that.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are happy to have made something to demo despite the changes in ideas.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained several important insights:

  • Early Planning: The importance of thorough planning and setting clear objectives from the outset to guide the development process.
  • Methodical Approach: The value of being methodical and organized in executing our plan to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Decisive Action: The need to make timely decisions and be agile in responding to changes to keep the project on track.

These lessons will guide us as we continue to develop and expand Glympse, helping us to improve our project management and development processes in the future.

What's next for Glympse

As we look to the future for Glympse, our focus will be on implementing the interactive features of the platform. Our goals include:

  • Interactive Simulations: Developing more detailed and immersive 'day in the life' simulations to provide users with deeper insights into various job roles and company environments.
  • Integration of Emerging Technologies: Exploring the integration of technologies such asaugmented reality (AR) to create more engaging and realistic career exploration experiences.
  • Expanded Content Library: Increasing the range and diversity of content by partnering with additional companies and industries to offer a broader spectrum of career insights.
  • User Feedback and Iteration: Continuously gathering feedback from users to refine and improve the platform's features, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of students and companies.
  • Market Expansion: Gradually expanding our user base beyond university students to include high school students and early career professionals, broadening the impact of our platform.
