Inspiration
The idea for GloxWallpaper came from wanting a simple wallpaper management application without paying for premium software. After seeing Wallpaper Engine on Steam, I wanted to build a free, open-source alternative that focuses on static wallpapers instead of animated backgrounds. The goal was to create something lightweight, easy to use, and accessible to everyone—from high-end gaming PCs to older low-end systems.
What it does
GloxWallpaper is a lightweight Windows desktop application that allows users to browse, organize, and apply wallpapers with a clean interface. It provides quick wallpaper management while using minimal system resources and supports local wallpaper collections without requiring any background services.
How we built it
The application was built using Python with Tkinter for the graphical interface. Pillow was used for image handling, while the Windows API enables wallpaper changes. PyInstaller packages the project into a standalone Windows application, making it easy to distribute and use.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the biggest challenges included interacting with the Windows API to reliably change wallpapers, packaging the application with all required assets, organizing wallpaper directories, and ensuring the application remained lightweight and responsive across different Windows systems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a completely free and open-source wallpaper manager that is simple, fast, and resource-efficient. The project delivers its core functionality without unnecessary complexity, making desktop customization accessible to users regardless of their hardware.
What we learned
This project improved our understanding of desktop application development with Python, Windows API integration, GUI design using Tkinter, project packaging with PyInstaller, and organizing applications for open-source distribution.
What's next for GloxWallpaper
Future updates include multiple wallpaper collections, favorites, categories, search and filtering, improved UI customization, scheduled wallpaper rotation, additional image format support, and a more streamlined first-time setup experience while keeping the application lightweight and open source.
