Everyone should feel comfortable with their skin and have the right to know what is in their products. Many people suffer from skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, hives, etc., and we wanted to be able to provide information about safe products to use. Having skin conditions does not mean skin products should be any less accessible and our hope is to inform consumers and advocate for product transparency.

What it does

glow is a mobile application that helps individuals find personalized skin products with healthy ingredients. Our application is built to assist people with skin conditions and help them find the best products for their skin. It utilizes a quick scanning feature that allows users to quickly be informed about products. In addition, glow also provides users with blog articles about skincare and personalized product recommendations from dermatologists and medical professionals. We hope to create a world where everyone knows what is in their products.

How we built it

For our frontend, we utilized Figma.

For our backend, we used AndroidStudio and implemented Google barcode API for the scanner function.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we wanted to use React Native but were unfamiliar with Javascript. Android Studio had many components that needed to be integrated and the interface was tricky to use. When implementing the Google barcode API, it was not running as expected and finicky. In addition, we also had to watch tutorials on how to use the platform and spent time debugging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud of our team for being able to create a project that has the potential to help individuals and make an impact in the community. We feel accomplished with completing the prototype on Figma within the 36-hour timeframe and also figuring out how to code in AndroidStudio and implement Google Barcode API.

What we learned

Hackathons are hard and tiring. Time management is important. You learn a lot during hackathons. We learned how to use AndroidStudio and Figma and made an amazing project.

What's next for glow

We can propose this project to EWG Skin Deep and partner with other organizations that are passionate about product transparency. We also want to work with communities with skin conditions and understand more about their needs in skincare to make sure glow can assist them with their skincare.
