Inspiration

We wanted to make language learning feel natural — not as an isolated app, but integrated into everyday browsing.
The Chrome Built-in AI APIs gave us a unique chance to turn the entire web into a living classroom.

What it does

Glotian is a Chrome-built AI side panel that helps users translate, summarize, and learn from any webpage instantly.
It uses Chrome’s on-device Translator, Summarizer, and Prompt APIs to provide context-aware learning — including vocabulary review, reading-level adaptation, and writing feedback.
It’s also expanding to mobile and web for cross-platform learning continuity.

How we built it

We built Glotian using:

• Chrome Built-in AI APIs (Translator, Summarizer, Prompt, Proofreader, Writer, Rewriter API)
• JavaScript + TypeScript + React + Manifest V3
• Supabase for user data sync and storage

Challenges we ran into

• Integrating multiple Chrome AI APIs seamlessly into a single side panel workflow
  
• Balancing on-device performance and real-time translation quality
  
• Designing a consistent UX that scales across Chrome, mobile, and web

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Built a working Chrome AI side panel with instant translation & summarization
  
• Created the first “AI-native language learning loop” where translation = learning
  
• Designed a scalable architecture for multi-platform expansion

What we learned

• How to combine Chrome’s new AI APIs for user-facing educational experiences
  
• Importance of lightweight, local-first design for instant feedback
  
• That learning tools become powerful when embedded in daily life, not separated from it

What's next for Glotian

• Launching our mobile & web apps for seamless cross-device learning
  
• Adding “AI speaking coach” and “reading-level auto-adjust” using Chrome’s upcoming multimodal models
