Our team all go to Epsom College in Malaysia where there are many cultures and languages being shared consistently, we wanted to share our unqiue oppurtinity with the rest of the world and help foster meaningful connection between strangers from diffrent walks of life.
Global Chat (prototype) is meant to connect to anybody using the website and be able to message them, there is a translation feature to be able to understand and talk to anybody and a built in personal dictionary that you can use to add words or phrases that people have messaged you, either as a way to learn a new language or to collect trophies of your chats!
We used Google Translate's API to handle the translation features and a mixture of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
It was quite hard to find a translation API that provided a lot of languages that were accurate, we solved this by consulting our multilingual school and their wide array of foreign students to help pinpoint an effective and reliable translator.
We managed to complete a full website, aside from the communications with other devices, within only 3 days with the help of this amazing team and the linguistical resources from our school. It is also our first time creating a fully-fledged website using JavaScript and we are quite proud of the layout and structure of our CSS coding.
We learnt how to manage our time effectively, and how to connect the scripts between JS and HTML, rather than using the function in HTML, which made the compiling and decoding of the program much easier. We also learnt how to publish websites on GitHub for everybody to see, and we hope we can make more websites and applications like this for everybody to enjoy.
We hope to finish the communication part using FireBase so that it can be fully working and be accessible for everybody!
