Inspiration
I have observed over the years that there is no game known to man that provides equal opportunity for the sighted and visual impaired to compete in the same activity and each having equal chance of winning.
What it does
It promotes social inclusion, community solidarity and empathy. Over time physical fitness components of balance, agility, leg power, coordination is achieved.
How I built it
The game was designed by Franz Atare in 2016. The name floormatics was coined from two words Floor (Flat surface) and Matics (Maneuver) that is Floor + Matics. The game requires participants to maneuver from one marked spot to the other with their eyes blinded and accumulating points from each successive move. We have 16 boxes of different shapes. The activity flexible and can be performed indoors and outdoors by all irrespective of social status, religion and does not require much space to set up the game.
Challenges I ran into
Securing funds to advertise outside Nigeria, digitalize the lines to make officiating easy most especially for the visual impaired participants and getting a governing board with continental representation.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Its efficacy has been demonstrated in selected schools in Nigeria and among post-graduate students from 44 African Countries who now serve as ambassadors. The model has been developed, local trade mark secured and patent registration is in progress and ready for globalization.
What I learned
It is possible for persons living with disability to compete in some sport activity with their able counterpart. it is also possible to organize a global sporting events for those who do not have the skill to compete in regular sports (Olympics and Para-Olympics) to have an alternative activity to be engaged on.
What's next for Globalization of floormatics game
The focus now is to establish continental governing board to set standards for best practices, digitization and to internationalize the game of floormatics.
