Inspiration

It is sometimes hard for a person to communicate with others, especially when they speak to someone who has difficulty hearing or they are native to some other language. We saw this as an opportunity and decided to end this for once in all.

What it does

It takes in your input as speech and then translates your speech into the language of your desire.

It works with asking you for a language of your desired output, then it will prompt you to speak into the app which will then run your speech through the translator and output the translated speech in the language that you chose.

How we built it

We utilized the native python GUI tkinter. With this we used speech recognition and translator to complete our application.

Challenges we ran into

We were new to python and how GUI worked. We also had never previously worked with recognition and translators so we had to learn it from scratch. We also wanted to add many more features to make our app the best possible one but ultimately were not able to all the features that we dreamed of. This was also our first hackathon so it was hard to adapt to the new environment. We also ran into many different problems with the installation and setting up of the different tools.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to make an app at our first hackathon that was able to run properly. We used many new tools that we weren't familiar with such as tkinter and API's. We are also proud that were did not give up even though we faced so many bugs and problems with all the new tools and that we powered through to finish our final goal.

What we learned

We learned how to use many new tools as we stated above such as API's and how to efficiently work throughout the 12 hour hackathon. We also learned how to tackle many bugs and how to solve real world problems using our technology.

What's next for Global Translator

We will be expanding on the app, adding user customizations, more languages and ability for it to recognize different accents.
