Inspiration
As people of colour, we wanted to make our cultures understood, for people to be more open-minded and see similarities between their backgrounds and histories. We aimed to make an easily accessible digital space for learning about cultures that people might not otherwise be exposed to.
What it does
It is a desktop app that is scalable into a mobile app that has been designed to solve cultural disconnect. We allow people all over the world to explore cultures of others across the globe by simply clicking their country/area. This means that it is easy to learn about the heritage and cultures of others without needing to know anyone from the region, allowing for more acceptance and understanding of other cultures.
How we built it
We made a Kanban board to plan out our work. After coming up with out idea, we compiled a list of requirements and did a MoSCoW prioritisation. We split the work into its components, being database, API, frontend and third party integrations.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to connect the Raspberry Pi through Ethernet to serve our application code, but we were not able to after following the instructions.
We had hosted the database on the cloud (Supabase) and set up a local codebase to connect to the database server, however the connection to the database from the code failed because of some issue in the network in between. In the end, we made a local copy of the database on a laptop instead.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We made a working app that has the potential to make a difference in bringing different communities together.
What we learned
We each learned how to better integrate AI into our workflows, particularly as a planning tool to work from and improve upon an initial design.
What's next for Global Time Capsule
We would be interested to see if friends and family would be interested in using the app and would encourage any organisations to use this project to celebrate cultural diversity in their communities.
