Inspiration
Global Studios was inspired by the inequalities that exist across many industries, especially tech and entertainment. As a diverse team of women, we saw firsthand how women of color are often underrepresented in computer science and the film industry. Cinema is more than entertainment; it is culture, identity, and storytelling. We wanted to create a platform where everyone, regardless of background or location, has a chance to be seen and heard.
What it does
Global Studios is a global platform that connects people across the film industry. Users can create profiles, share their work, and build international networks. An actor in Venezuela can connect with a director in Europe, or a writer in Asia can collaborate with a producer in the U.S. Our interactive globe helps users visualize global connections and develop a global citizen mindset.
How we built it
We built Global Studios using modern web technologies. Our process began with Figma, where we collaborated on UI/UX designs, wireframes, and user flows. This allowed our team to visually align on the experience we wanted to create and ensure the platform felt intuitive and welcoming to users worldwide. For development, we used VS Code as our primary code editor and created a shared GitHub repository to manage version control, collaboration, and feature development. GitHub allowed us to work efficiently as a team, track changes, and merge contributions seamlessly. By combining thoughtful design with structured development practices, we were able to turn our vision into a functional, globally focused platform.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was avoiding the same gatekeeping structures that exist in traditional industries. We were intentional about not recreating systems that prioritize status, location, or existing connections over talent and potential. Designing a platform that feels both global and personal required deep consideration of usability, cultural differences, and equitable visibility, ensuring users from all backgrounds could be discovered and valued equally. A major technical challenge was developing the interactive 3D globe. Allowing users to rotate the globe smoothly, select individual continents, and trigger navigation to pages containing film-industry insights for each region required extensive experimentation and iteration. Mapping accurate interactions, handling performance issues, and ensuring the experience was intuitive across devices proved to be a complex and time-consuming process. Additionally, working within time constraints while coordinating as a diverse team with different responsibilities pushed us to communicate clearly, make strategic decisions, and prioritize features that best supported our mission. These challenges ultimately strengthened our collaboration and reinforced our commitment to building an inclusive, globally connected platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a platform that centers inclusivity and global connection. Building an interactive globe that visually represents the worldwide film community was a major milestone. Most importantly, we created a space where “no one” can become “someone worth connecting with."
What we learned
We learned that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. Access, visibility, and connection are powerful tools for change. We also learned the importance of building with intention; technology can either reinforce inequality or help dismantle it.
What's next for GLOBAL STUDIOS
Next, we plan to expand platform features, grow our global community, and introduce tools that support collaboration, mentorship, and discovery. Our goal is to continue bridging gaps in the film industry while empowering underrepresented voices to tell their stories, because creativity and community have no borders.
