Around the world, women, girls, and individuals in the LGBTQ+ community suffer disproportionately from gender-based violence (GBV) - including, but not limited to, sexual assault, harassment, intimate partner violence, and verbal, emotional, and mental abuse.

It has been researched that pandemics usually lead to breakdowns of social infrastructures thus magnifying the already existing weaknesses and conflicts. As a result, with the additional social distancing and isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, rates of GBV have increased, and so we were inspired to do something about it.

We were also motivated by the scarcity of known reproductive health resources available to the youth. In today's society, we realized there are pervasive stigmas permeated to our society, imposing the feeling of shame and disgust to people, which lead to lower self-esteem and self-confidence. This result in the feeling of embarrassment to seek medical attention when needed, or shame to do something such as getting an abortion, to escape the judging eyes of today's society.

Therefore, we resolved to make resources, such as contraception, HIV, STIs, and other reproductive health information, products, and services, more accessible to people and create a safe place for people in concern could connect and relate with one another of a similar background.

What it does

It is an agglomeration of resources to help combat gender-based violence and empower the youth with reproductive health resources in these unprecedented times.

How we built it

We built the prototype using Figma

Challenges we ran into

It was our first time using Figma so it was a little challenging. We also had more trouble than expected finding resources ourselves, all the more reason why our website is needed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to come up with an idea and create a basic prototype of it in a very short time frame.

What we learned

We learnt how to wireframe and prototype using Figma!

What's next for The Safe Space Online

Creating the actual website! We got the domain name and intend to use it.
