Inspiration Many kids sometimes feel lonely, stressed, or just want someone kind to listen to them. We wanted to create a safe, loving presence like a caring grandpa who always has time for them. That idea became Grandpa’s Hug—a voice companion kids can trust.
What it does Grandpa’s Hug is a voice-powered AI assistant for kids. Children can talk to “Grandpa”, share their day, ask questions, or seek comfort. Grandpa responds in a warm, gentle, and supportive way—listening, encouraging, and guiding them like a loving elder would.
How we built it We built Grandpa’s Hug using: ElevenLabs for warm, natural grandpa-style voice Speech recognition for understanding kids’ speech AI conversation tuning to ensure safe, supportive, age-appropriate responses We focused heavily on tone, emotional sensitivity, and making the interaction feel human and comforting.
Challenges we ran into Designing age-appropriate personality tuning so responses always feel caring, gentle, and safe Creating consistent conversational flow, so Grandpa remembers context and feels natural to talk to Managing latency and smooth voice response timing so conversations don’t feel slow or robotic Ensuring clear speech handling for different kid voices, tones, and background noise Building reliable emotion-aware responses without being overly sensitive or inappropriate
Accomplishments that we’re proud of We successfully created a caring AI grandpa that kids genuinely enjoy talking to. The emotional warmth and natural voice interaction feel meaningful and real.
What we learned We learned how important emotional design is in AI, how to tune conversational agents for children, and how voice experiences differ from normal chatbots.
