Inspiration

Politicians need to budget options so as to take the right decision, right? Well, actually this is easier said than done, especially with as many unknowns as with this crisis. The moment you don't put a figure, the moment they lose all connection to reality.

What it does

Put a price on an option.

i.e. How much will it cost to delay the start of global cooperation? For instance, in France that will be around 3 to 5 billion € per working day.

How much will cost every additional day until the virus is eradicated worldwide? In France that will be around 0,2 to 1 billion € a day.

How I built it

Not built yet... got some ideas though.

Challenges I ran into

Politicians don't like to be told about choices, especially hard ones.

They'll rather go for the stupid idea where they don't make the choice or can find some scapegoat.

Basically most countries, with the notable exception of the Feroes in Europe, have chosen what I call the New Holocaust: 4 to 6 millions deaths in Europe, whether the do-nothing of herd immunity, of the repeat of flattening the curve.

You'd believe people you know well read papers, they don't, or very late.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

My March 14th Global Policy paper, defined (and put a figure) behind medical, social and economic issues. Was approved why the minister in charge in 6 minutes sharp (a seven page very dense paper) as very useful. The cogs started working at once. Became official policy of France on March 16th. Economic support packages has been copied worldwide. Austerity as we knew post-2008 is over.

Well it took one full week to get to 10 Downing Street, because of translation issues.

I never got any back news from the EU commissioners even when dutifully alerted by Guy Verhofstadt.

What I learned

Ideas, even when in the hands of the right people are mostly useless if you keep the people behind off. No Jean Monnet committee, without a working committee and without the Jean Monnet of the day.

There's still a lot to be done. Such an approach will be useful, post medical crisis, either to re-start the European project, address climate change, or avoid total financial meltdown in November.

What's next for Global Coordination

Establish the beginning of an open European committee to coordinate European countries' policies... and maybe even beyond. Beyond most needed too.
