Inspiration
Most games are built around fixed rules and fairness. But while playing games, I noticed something interesting—players often enjoy breaking games just as much as playing them. Speedrunners, for example, exploit glitches to skip levels or move faster.
That inspired me to ask: What if breaking the game was the game?
What it does
Glitchrift is a retro-style pixel game where progression is only possible by exploiting intentional glitches. Players must use mechanics like wall clipping, physics exploits, and visual corruption to solve levels.
Instead of avoiding bugs, the player is encouraged to discover and use them strategically.
How I built it
Engine: Godot (HTML5 export for browser play) Language: GDScript Resolution: 320×180 for a retro feel
Core systems include:
Controlled collision disabling (for wall clipping) Input-based physics manipulation (momentum glitches) Visual distortion effects for hints Simple UI + cross-platform controls (keyboard + touch)
Challenges we ran into
Making glitches feel intentional and fun, not frustrating Ensuring mechanics work consistently across devices Designing levels where progress is impossible without glitches Balancing confusion and discovery for players
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Turned “glitches” into core gameplay mechanics instead of bugs Built a fully playable browser game with both keyboard and touch controls Designed levels that require breaking the game to progress Created a unique retro aesthetic with intentional visual distortion
What we learned
Creative mechanics can come from breaking traditional rules Balancing confusion and discovery is key in game design Cross-platform controls require careful simplicity Small, focused ideas can create engaging gameplay 🔮 What's next for Glitchrift Add more advanced glitch mechanics (UI corruption, fake crashes) Improve level design and difficulty progression Add sound design and polish visual effects Introduce a speedrun mode and player challenges
If you want, I can also make this sound more impressive/award-winning or more casual and fun depending on the vibe you want 👍
