Inspiration
We where inspired by the potential expansion of AR and LLM use cases into people's daily life. This sparked the idea to build Glimpse--a cutting edge social media platform that combines augmented reality with large language models to help immerse people into each other's favorite spots and moments.
What it does
Glimpse allows people to share posts about there favorite places or moments. Each person has their own feed which can be filtered by place. For example, if someone wanted to find a place to get Matcha, they could filter there feed by best matcha spots and get a list of trending related posts. What sets our product apart from others is instead of just viewing the post, you are immersed in it thanks to cutting edge AR and LLMs that enable you to "move" within the posts.
How we built it
We built the front end of Glimpse using NextJS and plain javascipt. The back-end is powered by Firebase, included a Firestore database to store users and posts and seamless integration with Google authentication for creating and singing into accounts. ThreeJS is used to create many of the animations on our site, and the Gemini API is used to power a chat bot and short blurb to provide background on each post. Additionally, the Google Maps API is used to provide location data for each post.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was the spatial rendering to incorporate AR into the social media sphere. An issue was analyzing the depth of a specific point using the Deepify API. The 3D scenes were not generated properly and there were some initially inconsistent results. We resolved this by adjusted the frames and angle of these frames.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We've created a unique platform where AI, AR, and real-world interactions converge to create immersive, intelligent experiences that bridge the digital and physical worlds.
What we learned
We learned a lot about building a fullstack app, as many of use did not have extensive experience in different aspects of the tech stack.
What's next for Glimpse
We are hoping to implement more AI in different aspect of the app, providing summaries and helping to provide recommendations for different posts of interest.
