Glimpse

Inspiration

Every one of us has at some point been directly, or indirectly affected by mental health issues in our community, with our loved ones, or even with ourselves. With Chrome making up about 65.4% of the browser market share worldwide, it is an accessible platform on which users can quickly log their moods, especially if it’s a Chrome extension. We worked on this project with hopes to use this application ourselves, whenever we need a check-in or if we have a minute or two to play a fun game.

What it does

Our project is called Glimpse, and it is a Google Chrome extension that reminds people to check in with themselves. it gives users the options of writing down their thoughts in a journal or playing an online game to improve their moods. Mental health issues are so prevalent among the youth, especially in recent years, so we wanted to create this extension as part of the global impact vertical to remind people to evaluate how they’re really doing and to take care of themselves.

How we built it

We built our Chrome extension using HTML for the text, CSS for the style, and JavaScript to make our project interactive. One feature of our extension is the “fun” button. When the user clicks on this button, the user is redirected to a random website to play a game and destress. Our team picked games that we enjoy, with a favorite being the recent Google Doodle where a user can make boba drinks for a line of customers.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge when making this interactive experience was generating a random game for the user to play. After testing ideas such as creating an array of links or creating various functions to generate a random number, we devised a solution of generating a random number and connecting each number to a unique link.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that our team was able to create a project for a cause that we are passionate about, and that together, we learned new skills through HackSC and collaborated to create designs and talk through programming challenges.

What we learned

One challenge that later became something we were proud to overcome was adjusting to the new languages we had to use. However, everyone in our team was extremely supportive of one another because we found out we were all learning.
