Inspiration
I was inspired by the need for inclusive, safe, and emotionally intelligent storytelling platforms for children. Many apps focus on consumption, but wanted to build something interactive — where kids become creators, not just listeners. Drawing from educational tech, AI advancements, and therapeutic frameworks, we envisioned Glimmer: a tool where every child can craft meaningful stories using their voice, imagination, and emotions.
What it does
Glimmer is an AI-powered storytelling platform that lets children: Create visual stories using a drag-and-drop symbol interface Generate custom illustrations and real-time narration Interact with characters in a live performance mode Choose narrator voices based on mood or story type Access therapeutic storytelling focused on emotional growth Collaborate with others in real time and share finished stories
How we built it
Frontend: React 18, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion for animations Story Engine: Drag-and-drop interface with React DND and AI-driven suggestions AI Integrations: GPT-4 (OpenAI) for generating structured, emotional storylines ElevenLabs for expressive, real-time voice synthesis Backend: Supabase (authentication, real-time syncing, storage, edge functions) Accessibility: WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, reduced motion, screen reader support
Challenges we ran into
Tuning prompt engineering to balance structure and creative flexibility Ensuring real-time voice synthesis aligned emotionally with story tone Designing a drag-and-drop experience that’s accessible to all users Supporting collaboration without overloading the browser Creating a safe environment that complies with COPPA while remaining feature-rich
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a full-stack AI storytelling system that runs entirely in the browser Created a therapeutic storytelling mode with real clinical applications Designed one of the most comprehensive accessibility systems in any storytelling platform Supported multilingual stories with emotional narration Enabled real-time collaboration and story sharing without requiring user accounts
What we learned
How to blend AI, UX, and accessibility for a young audience The power of multimodal storytelling (voice + visuals + interaction) The importance of emotion design in AI-driven experiences How to prioritize privacy and compliance without sacrificing features That storytelling can be a powerful tool for learning, healing, and joy
What's next for Glimmer
AR visualization: Let kids see their stories come to life in 3D space Gesture control: Use hand motions to place symbols or trigger actions Voice cloning: Let parents or teachers become the narrator Expanded therapy support: Track SEL outcomes and personalize story paths Research collaborations: Partner with universities to measure learning and emotional impact Open source launch: Empower educators, therapists, and families worldwide to contribute
