Inspiration
Uttarakhand(state in India), known as the Land of the Gods, is rich in natural beauty, spiritual heritage, and adventure destinations. However, tourists often face difficulties in finding authentic, personalized, and safe travel plans — especially for unexplored places in hilly terrains.
We wanted to build something that not only promotes eco-tourism in Uttarakhand but also solves the challenges of trip planning, accessibility, weather awareness, and sustainable travel, all through one intelligent platform.
What it does
GlideAway is a smart travel web-application made for exploring Uttarakhand. It helps users find popular and hidden destinations across Garhwal and Kumaon. The web-application shows real-time weather, hotel options, and has a "Things to Do" section with categories like adventure, trekking, and spiritual tours.
Users can also read and share travel experiences. It includes details about all 13 districts—key attractions, famous treks, local culture, and how to reach each place. GlideAway makes exploring Uttarakhand easy and engaging.
How we built it
We used the following stack and tools:
- Frontend: React.js with Tailwind CSS for a responsive UI.
- Backend: Node.js with Express for APIs.
- Data & APIs:
- OpenWeather API for live weather updates.
- Mapbox/Leaflet for route planning and mapping.
- Uttarakhand Tourism Board data for verified destinations.
- RapidApi.com for hotels data
Challenges we ran into
- Lack of detailed datasets for remote areas of Uttarakhand.
- Integrating real-time road condition APIs for hilly regions.
- Making the UI accessible for older and less tech-savvy tourists.
- backend Api calls
- In integrating cloudinary(multer library)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully designed a region-specific travel platform focused entirely on Uttarakhand.
- Structured and displayed data in an organized and user-friendly way.
- Integrated weather, travel, and cultural information into a single interactive platform. 4.Made the platform visually engaging and easy to navigate for all age groups.
What we learned
-The importance of building tech for local problems — even global hackathons need regional impact. -Working with APIs under real-world constraints like slow internet and incomplete or limited data. -Understanding tourism challenges in hill states like Uttarakhand from both local and traveler perspectives. -The value of not losing patience and staying consistent while coding and debugging complex features.
What's next for GlideAway -Web Application
- Partnering with the Uttarakhand Tourism Department for real-time data access.
- Building a feature that supports offline usage and SMS-based and AI recommended itinerary suggestions.
- Expanding to support travel planning in other Himalayan regions while keeping a strong focus on sustainability.
Region
GlideAway is focused exclusively on Uttarakhand, a northern Indian state divided into two main regions:
- Garhwal Region – includes Dehradun, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Kedarnath, Badrinath, etc.
- Kumaon Region – includes Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh, Mukteshwar, etc.
While this project is developed as part of a global-level hackathon, it targets local tourism innovation in India with the vision of expanding globally to other underserved mountain destinations.
