Inspiration
Trying on makeup online is guesswork. You pick a shade, order it, and it shows up looking nothing like you expected. We wanted a way to see makeup on a real face before buying, without ever turning on a camera.
What it does
Glammie is a makeup studio for the iPhone Duo. It renders a real 3D portrait on-device and composites makeup directly into the model's texture, so pigment stays locked to the skin as the face turns. With Preview All, you pick a category like lips and the view splits into four faces, each wearing a different shade, so you can compare side by side and page through the whole catalogue. Tap one and you're back to a single face wearing it. The layout follows the hinge: closed, it's a pocket mirror; open, the palette unfolds below the crease; in tabletop mode, the face stands on the raised half while the palette lies flat. Press a swatch to apply it instantly, or hold it to open a colour wheel and dial in a custom shade live. Your look is saved even if you fold, rotate, or quit.
How we built it
We sketched the foundations in Procreate, then used Bitrig to build the app quickly in native Swift. Claude Code helped us research and develop hex values and colour correction for realistic shades. We also built a subscription layer around a single PremiumStore protocol with mock and RevenueCat implementations, so monetisation plugs in without touching the makeup logic.
Challenges we ran into
The camera and gyroscope weren't available, so we built around a mock camera shell instead. Fashion and makeup assets were limited, and setting up RevenueCat took more effort than expected.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Integrating the mock camera shell into the iOS front end, getting Preview All running with a separate renderer and throwaway save file per cell, and keeping a clean version control process throughout.
What we learned
We learned a lot about teamwork, communication, and coordination, and about asking teammates for help as soon as we hit a roadblock. Bitrig showed us how fast iteration can be, and we gained a much deeper appreciation for user experience design.
What's next for Glammie
We want to add a mirror lights effect, more real-time AI effects and filters for the face, more premium features, screenshots, and social sharing between users and to other apps. We also plan to explore deeper AI integration for personalised shade recommendations.
