Inspiration

Red Crown Arena was inspired by my passion for classic RPGs and turn based fighting games. I always wanted to combine these two genres into a cohesive gladiator simulator, an experience featuring core RPG elements like character creation, resource management, deep progression and that all seamlessly integrated with the strategic 1v1 arena battles and turn based mechanics that so many players love.

What it does

Red Crown Arena is an HD-2D gladiator simulator where players create and customize their own fighter before battling through ten increasingly difficult tournaments, each ending with a unique champion boss fight. Victories reward gold and experience, allowing players to permanently improve their stats and purchase stronger equipment or even upgrade the town itself. Additionally, players can choose between Standard Mode (with traditional saving and checkpoints) and Hardcore Gladiator Mode, where defeat means permanent death and starting over from the beginning.

How we built it

I am building this game using Godot Engine 4, utilizing GDScript for the core mechanics, UI layouts, and turn based combat systems.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge by far has been balancing the progression system. Ensuring that character leveling, equipment upgrades, and enemy scaling feel fair, while still offering a rewarding and gradual ramp up in difficulty. Another major challenge is optimization. The combat system needs to remain accessible and intuitive for mobile devices without sacrificing the deep, meaningful strategic decisions that keep players engaged until the very end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am incredibly proud of finally creating the exact game I always wanted to play when I was younger. I am also thrilled with the core gameplay loop, which is designed to keep players coming back for more, whether they are looking to conquer the base game, experiment with unique stat builds, or test their skills in the brutal Hardcore Gladiator Mode.

What we learned

I learned the critical importance of documenting the core game mechanics and scope beforehand. Outlining the fundamental pillars of the game before diving into development. This makes it much easier to add extra features later on.

What's next for Red Crown Arena

Once the core game is complete, I plan to introduce an Endless Mode so players can continue testing their custom builds long after defeating the final tournament. I also want to add tracking for unique achievements that display proudly on the title screen (such as completing a run using only a single piece of armor). Looking further ahead, implementing global leaderboards and an integrated speed run timer will add an extra strong competitive layer, while adding text based narrative events will offer high risk, high reward decisions to the overall journey between battles.
