Inspiration

With this year being the International Year for Glaciers' Preservation, I saw it very necessary to innovate for them and find a way to engage individuals in the fight against climate change. At Glacier Guardian, we're tackling the urgent global water crisis head-on, turning complex environmental challenges into something everyone can understand and act on. I believe that by connecting big problems to our daily lives, we can make a real difference. This app is your go-to guide, blending cutting-edge data with engaging tools, all built around three key pillars: Monitor, Learn, and Act.

What it does

Glacier Guardian is built around three key pillars: Monitor, Learn& Act •Monitor the Change, Explore the World: Witness the powerful reality of glacier retreat through stunning satellite imagery and our interactive map, tracking over 80 glaciers worldwide. Get vital, real-time information on these critical indicators of climate change. Our AI assistant is always ready to answer your glacier and climate change questions.

• Learn and Stay Informed: Explore real-time climate data and glacier health reports, all presented clearly on real time climate metrics and prediction models so you're always connected to the science. Understand the 'why' behind the 'what.'

• Act Daily & Conserve Water: Take tangible steps in your daily life. Our intuitive daily water tracker helps you not only manage your personal hydration for better health but also makes you mindful of your water usage patterns, paving the way for conservation. Plus, our fun, interactive game ‘Water Drop Journey’ teaches you practical ways to save water at home, showing how your small actions add up to a big impact. Join a growing community of fellow 'Glacier Guardians' in our forums, sharing ideas and working together towards a more sustainable future.

How we built it

I built the front end with Lovable and integrated it with a Supabase backend. I used API's and tokens from Open AI, Google Maps Platform, NASA EarthLogin, Copernicus, NOAA( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)

Challenges we ran into

I faced certain financial challenges from subscribing to Lovable, then getting a domain from NameCheap. Considering the dollar to cedi ratio, this was a big deal. Using NASA and Copernicus APIs for my prediction model posed challenges like handling large, heterogeneous satellite datasets, temporal mismatches, and API rate limits. Integrating this data with ChatGPT-4.0 also required overcoming modeling issues such as missing values, data noise, and the complexity of fusing multimodal geospatial inputs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I have won the Xylem Global Student Innovation Challenge with this project.

What we learned

I learnt how to prompt and use AI to get the best out of it. Also, I learnt how to use no code tools to solve real world problems. With developing the LLM prediction model, I learnt valuable skills like handling real- world API integrations and data preprocessing at scale.

What's next for Glacier Guardian

Glacier Guardian's impact is clear: We are not just building an app; we are cultivating a new generation of informed and engaged climate guardians. We transform complex data into actionable insights, making conservation a daily, tangible effort. For the next steps, I envision Glacier Guardian becoming a cornerstone for environmental education in schools, a powerful tool for global conservation organizations, and a growing community driving real change. To make the platform great, I aim to deepen data visualization capabilities to enhance credibility and engagement through richer insights.
