GiveConnect

The recent rise of food prices and supply problems have shed light in the stark difference among how we experience the world. For some it is a minor inconvenience at the grocery store, and for others it is a harsh reality. We were inspired to lessen this difference in how we experience reality and came up with Give Connect.

What it does

GiveConnect gives us the ability to visualize and provide donations to places affected by Severe Acute Malnutrion in Ethiopia.The places affected by Severe Acute Malnutrition are displayed on the map, in addition to place name, the relevant government organization active in that area and Non-governmental organization (NGO). In addition, the number of people affected by Severe Acute Malnutrition in that area is displayed. To donate click on the Donation link and it would take you to the NGO that is active in that specific area.

How we built it

We built it primarily using python and different python libraries such numpy and pandas, to generate a web page.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was combining the data provided by the Humanitarian Data Exchange and putting all the point on the map, in addition to combining that data with data containing the list of NGOs active in that area. Another challenge was the feature that opens google maps and show the exact location which was affected by Severe Acute Malnutrition .

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the fact that we were able to deliver on the most important features that we had planned which also happened to be the most challenges.

What we learned

We learned how to use folium, pandas and numpy python libraries. In addition, we learned how to collaborate as a team in a development environment and how to leverage version control to achieve this end. One of the most important things we learned however, is the severity of malnutrition around the world, this has made us question our model of reality and discuss to remodel our reality with the data we encountered. We are grateful for all things we have and this opportunity we are given, and feel responsible in making the reality that we all want to experience.

What's next for GiveConnect

We will expand it to include other countries, provide more detail for each location , in addition to providing which information regarding how accessible each area is since some of the places are difficult to reach. Taking all this into account we hope to provide a new feature that show how to efficiently distribute resources.
