Sassy Slash: Project Story & Submission

Inspiration

The inspiration for Sassy Slash struck during a late-night coding session fueled by a rather chaotic custom-ordered pizza loaded with an absurd mix of sweet fruits and savory vegetables. We found ourselves joking about how the toppings looked like they were reacting to being chopped up. That whimsical thought sparked an idea: What if an arcade slicing game collided with survival crafting and gourmet pizza-making?

We wanted to capture the frantic, satisfying energy of classic swipe-to-slice games while grounding it in a quirky, vibrant universe where ingredients have big personalities. Setting the game in Slash County allowed us to lean entirely into cartoonish chaos—turning ordinary kitchen prep into an epic survival challenge against bouncy, expressive musical food items.


What it does

Sassy Slash is a fast-paced, single-player mobile arcade survival game built specifically for portrait orientation ($9:16$). Players step into the shoes of a culinary survivalist armed with a trusty hunting slash knife.

The gameplay revolves around:

  • The Slicing Mechanic: Dynamic fruits and vegetables spawn onto the screen with hilarious, expressive animated faces. Swiping cleanly harvests them for pizza crafting.
  • Survival & Resource Management: Players must balance gathering toppings, crafting structural crusts and defensive barriers, and eating pizzas to restore endurance as days grow increasingly demanding.
  • Escalating Game Modes: Features a progressive Story Campaign across quirky neighborhoods, intense Boss Challenges, Weekly Challenges and rotating Weekly Challenge modifiers.
  • 100% Offline-First Architecture: Operates entirely locally with zero external network requests, data tracking, or cloud dependencies, ensuring smooth, instantaneous gameplay anywhere.
  • Audio Experience: Packed with high-energy, bouncy chiptune-meets-funk soundtracks and dynamic sound effects that emphasize successful slices and comedic fruit shrieks.

How we built it

To keep the game snappy, lightweight, and completely offline-compatible, we architected Sassy Slash using modern web technologies packaged for mobile web-views and native wrappers:

  • Frontend & Rendering: Developed using vanilla JavaScript and high-performance HTML5 Canvas / CSS3 animations to maintain a rock-solid 60 FPS portrait target ($1080 \times 1920$).
  • Gesture Engine: Built a custom touch-and-mouse swipe detection pipeline that maps velocity and trajectory to accurately register "Combo Slashes."
  • Data Persistence: Utilized browser LocalStorage and IndexedDB to securely manage local high-score leaderboards and player inventory data entirely on-device.
  • Asset Pipeline & Audio: Created vibrant, saturated cartoon assets and integrated Web Audio API synthesizers and looping chiptune tracks for dynamic audio cues without external streaming overhead.

Challenges we ran into

Building an offline-first mobile action game came with unique technical hurdles:

  1. Precise Swipe Detection on Mobile: Early iterations struggled with touch latency and jagged swipe lines on high-refresh-rate mobile screens. We had to write a predictive smoothing algorithm for touch coordinates to ensure the hunting knife felt razor-sharp and responsive.
  2. Performance Optimization with Multiple Animated Entities: Rendering dozens of expressive fruits with distinct facial animations while handling collision detection for slicing caused frame drops. We resolved this by implementing an object pooling system for spawned ingredients.
  3. Balancing Chaos and Strategy: Merging frantic arcade slicing with resource management meant players could easily get overwhelmed. Fine-tuning the curve between survival resource gathering and high-speed slicing required extensive playtesting.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Teaching AI: We successfully prompted AI and taught gaming lingo to the AI agent to make the game codes and the game instantly playable.
  • Cohesive Art & Audio Identity: The fusion of hyper-colored cartoon visuals, comedic fruit expressions, and high-energy funk chiptunes created an instantly memorable atmosphere that matches our initial design vision.
  • Fluid Gesture Responsiveness: Achieving silky-smooth swipe registration that makes slicing feel deeply satisfying on portrait mobile screens.

What we learned

  • The Power of Polish: Small details—like a fruit's eye bulging when the knife gets close or snappy audio feedback on a combo slash—elevate a prototype from a simple tech demo into an addictive game experience.
  • Designing for One-Handed Play: Strict portrait orientation forced us to prioritize thumb ergonomics, teaching us how crucial UI layout is for mobile arcade games.
  • Local-First Reliability: Building without external dependencies simplified state management and eliminated loading spinners entirely.

What's next for Sassy Slash

  • More Neighborhoods in Slash County: Expanding the campaign mode with new biomes, sticky environmental hazards, and bizarre new mutant ingredients.
  • Expanded Boss Mechanics: Adding multi-phase boss battles with interactive kitchen counter traps.
  • Native App Store Packaging: Wrapping the core engine for iOS and Android app stores for seamless mobile installation.
