Challenge: Smart Health Challenge 5

Project Name: Give Me a Hand

Overview

Have you ever gone bowling? What about gardening? Do you remember how enjoyable that experience was? Now, imagine if those moments or similar experiences were suddenly out of reach. For millions living with limb loss in the United States alone—over 2.1 million —this is their reality. Enter Give Me a Hand, a groundbreaking virtual reality experience born from our passion for immersive technology and fueled by the conversations of our loved ones in the medical field. With Give Me a Hand, we offer more than just relief; we offer empathy, understanding, and a chance for them to reexperience activities at home.

Inspiration

Profound interest in virtual reality with loved ones in the medical field who talk about traumatic experiences.

What it does

Give Me a Hand is a VR Experience that allows the user to choose from a variety of hobbies or games that the user might relate to. Our focus is to gamify the therapeutic nature of treating Phantom Limb Pain, by providing an accessible and affordable experience at home.

How we built it

Our journey to create this product began with crafting a virtual reality project using Unreal Engine as our foundation. Alongside this, we employed Figma for crafting mock-ups and prototypes, Miro for collaborative brainstorming and organizing ideas, pain points, and goals. In the realm of development, we utilized C++ for blueprinting within Unreal Engine, Blender for editing assets to integrate seamlessly, and VR for comprehensive testing of our developments. Through this multifaceted approach, we pieced together an immersive experience designed to make a tangible impact on pain management for those with phantom limb pain.

Challenges we ran into

Navigating through adversity, we faced various obstacles including team member illness, indecision regarding project selection, pivoting from prior concepts, grappling with technical mechanics, and challenges in task delegation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our proudest achievement lies in successfully developing a working demo that mirrors our meticulously planned project and embodies the essence of our innovative idea.

What we learned

We learned valuable teamwork skills, project planning techniques, Unreal Engine proficiency, scene construction, mock-up creation, pain point identification, research methodologies, and blueprint development for Unreal Engine.
