The Problem
My phone kept hitting storage limits. The obvious fix was iCloud or Google One, ₹149/month. For photos I open maybe twice a year. That felt genuinely stupid.
The Idea
I'm on GitHub every day anyway. GitHub gives every user 1GB free per private repo and I wasn't using any of it for personal stuff. So I thought, why not just put my photos there?
What I Built
GitSnap lets you back up your photos to your own private GitHub repo. Sign in with GitHub, drag your photos, hit upload. Done. They sit in your own repo, you own them completely. No subscription, no middleman, no monthly charge.
How I Built It
- GitHub OAuth for login
- GitHub Contents API to push photos as base64 into a private repo
- No backend storage on my end, everything goes directly into the user's own GitHub account
- Kept the whole thing deliberately simple
Challenges
GitHub's API caps individual files at 100MB so large videos don't work, photos only. The 1GB repo limit is also a real ceiling so it's not for heavy users. Honestly the harder challenge was positioning, figuring out exactly who this is for took longer than writing the code.
What I Learned
Building something in a weekend is easy. Getting people to actually use it daily is the real problem. Also learned that GitHub's Contents API is surprisingly flexible for things it wasn't really designed for.
What's Next
- Mobile auto-backup so you don't have to drag anything
- Storage dashboard showing how much you've saved vs what iCloud would cost
- Multi-repo support for when 1GB fills up
