GirlsKnowGirls
GirlsKnowGirls is a nonprofit organization focused on providing women with a safe online space. One-on-one chats are anonymous and private, allowing women to express themselves freely without external pressure. Discussions can range from, family, friends, and hobbies, to romantic relationships and mental health. Our goal is to make emotional well-being a priority in every woman's life.
We were inspired by the fact of how women often find it difficult to discuss their issues without feeling a sense of guilt and shame. In addition, being online is not always extremely safe for women, and so by creating this space of other women facing similar issues, or women who genuinely want to help, it puts mental health in the forefront of everyone's mind.
My team members, Guang Yang and Xi Lu did most of the hacking involved on this project because they are more experienced. However, I did shadow Guang closely as she coded the project using HTML, and was involved in making decisions regarding what to do with the graphics. They, both having already completed their undergraduate studies, also learned a lot about coding this weekend. Xi Lu was focused on using AWS in order to incorporate an API for our web app, and Guang experimented with a React alternative, Vue, in order to make our project. In addition, we all learned how to work together in a team of individuals with different skill levels and assets and still somehow make a cohesive project.
