Team 23: Girls in Tech Together

Inspiration

I was inspired by the CS Listen research project at my school, led by UCSD, that investigates the lack of diversity in K-12 computer science education.

What it does

The girls in tech website is designed to help create a community for girls of all races to join to find other like-minded people in addition to providing them with helpful and free resources to help empower them to further their knowledge in computer science.

How we built it

We built our website with Replit through various free resources and tutorials we found online we were able to use both HTML and CSS to format and design our website to our liking and to serve (omg it took me so long to remember how to spell this) its purpose of providing resources to girls across the world.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the course of our web designing process, we ran into various problems from not typing in the code correctly to off-centered alignments. One of the biggest challenges we faced was trying to figure out how to center the div text and background in the page which we were able to solve after a couple of google searches and failed attempts. Another main problem we faced was trying to determine how we wanted to format the navigation bar. We couldn't decide whether the navigation bar would look better vertically across the left side or horizontally across the top. In the end, we thought the navigation bar looked cleaner across the top.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some of the accomplishments we were most proud of was being able to use an entirely new language and getting everything to work in the end. We were also very proud of the little details such as the way the text changes when we hover over it and the logos appearing in the corner of every page.

What we learned

Amazingly through this web design process, we found that we were able to learn some basic HTML and CSS through many online tutorials and the workshop provided. It was really fun to learn all these new lines of code through the many videos we found.

What's next for Girls in Tech Together

In the future, I would hope for girls in tech to have a webchat feature where girls across the world can connect in a chatroom to encourage each other to pursue their dreams in computer science even when the road gets tough. Additionally, we would want to provide a feature where girls can gain access to a mentor at any time to help them as their questions of computer science arise
