Inspiration

We were inspired by the lack of strong, positive female role models in the gaming industry. We wanted to create a video game with an empathetic, yet powerful, main character that would resonate with young girls and give them positivity.

What it does

In this game, players step into the shoes of a young girl who faces various bullying scenarios. Through engaging gameplay, players learn to respond to sexism and adversity in a positive and constructive manner. "Girl Power!" not only entertains, but also educates and inspires young girls, offering them the guidance and role models needed to navigate real-world complexities with strength, resilience, and grace.

How we built it

"Girl Power!" was created using RPG Maker and JavaScript. We first outlined the overall story and selected the different maps we wanted to use. We then designed the protagonist, the bullies, and the background characters. When we started programming the game, we utilized RPG Maker's event system to create dialogues and cutscenes. We also used RPG Maker's battle mechanics to create the different bullying scenarios, and made it so that the player can fight with kindness.

After we built the game, we registered the domain "gurlpower.us" through GoDaddy. We then created a website through Weebly that hosts the video game.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into while creating "Girl Power!" was implementing complex event sequences that used signals and conditional branches.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we learned how to use the RPG Maker framework and were able to create a fully functioning game with a complex storyline in the span of two days. We are also proud of the website we designed that hosts our game.

What we learned

We learned how to use RPG Maker and gained a better understanding of event based programming. We also learned game development skills, like dialog scripting and event management. In addition to these skills, we also learned how to register a domain through GoDaddy and create a website through Weebly.

What's next for Girl Power!

We would like to create more levels for our game that tackle even more issues that girls experience. We would also like to add character customization options so that users are able to create a character that they feel represents them.
