Inspiration
Healthcare today is reactive, we wait until we are already sick before treating the problem. This project was born from a deeply personal loss: the passing of a teammate’s grandmother, Sarogini, due to a late diagnosis. Her story inspired us to create a tool that shifts health from reactive to preventative by detecting illnesses before symptoms appear. We named the project GINI in her honour.
What it does
GINI is a wearable patch and companion app that tracks your body’s internal signals, like inflammation, cellular fatigue, and hormones, before you consciously feel them.
Predictive Alerts: It warns you about upcoming issues (like a cold or endometriosis risk) so you can take action early. Saro the AI Translator: Our friendly AI, Saro, turns complex biological data into simple, actionable daily tasks. Family Mode: Securely monitor the internal health of your kids or aging parents right from your phone.
How we built it
We wanted GINI to feel like a calming wellness companion, not a stressful medical device. We designed the conceptual framework for the ultra-thin biometric patch and built out a clean, minimalist user interface. We mapped out specific user journeys to ensure the complex data was intuitive, accessible, and easy to read at a glance.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was preventing health anxiety. Giving people access to their microscopic biological data can easily cause panic. To solve this, we created a "Worry Limit." If the app notices a user obsessively checking perfectly healthy vitals, Saro gently locks non-critical data for a few hours and encourages them to put their phone down.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of how human and empathetic the app feels. Instead of using scary medical jargon, Saro speaks like a caring friend. We are also proud of the built-in emergency protocols: if the patch detects a critical, life-threatening anomaly, it automatically bypasses standard notifications to contact emergency services.
What we learned
We learned that the future of health tech needs empathy just as much as it needs data. A truly effective health app must balance transparency with psychological safety, protecting a user's mental wellbeing just as fiercely as their physical health.
What's next for GINI
Doctor Integration: Adding a feature that allows users to send verified biometric reports directly to their healthcare provider. Hardware Prototyping: Moving from conceptual design into physical material testing for the GINI patch. Expanding Diagnostics: Mapping out new biological signals to help users stay ahead of even more conditions.
