Motivation
Alexa Skills Store offers vast selection of skills providing some form of math aid - from computational assistance, quizzes, reference, to verbal problem comprehension. With regard to memorization skills - scope, intended audience, quality of execution and assessment summary of ongoing skill usage - range widely.
Features
Ginger Math attempts to address some of the above by taking functionally narrow view without being overly simplistic. Skill's aim is to help kids memorize basic times tables by practicing multiplication and division at three consecutive difficulty levels.
Ginger Math follows daily practice to eventually emphasize repetition of factors requiring more attention in future rounds. It offers average success rate in easily understandable form (eg. "You are making just 1 mistake every 5 questions") as part of quantitative summary of the progress made so far. Qualitative, current and projected assessment based on past performance (eg. "You are steadily improving" or "You haven't made much of a splash lately" ) is also offered when available.
Ginger Math utilizes Alexa speech engine's interjections and Alexa Skills Kit Sound Library along with the language itself to bring fun factor into voice interactions (see video attachment). Similarly, on visual front, skill takes advantage of Alexa Presentation Language to customize its rendering on Echo devices with displays (see attached screenshots). It also makes significant use of the cards presented in the Alexa app to help more visually inclined learners (see video attachment).
Ginger Math gamifies practice by scoring each finished round and awards quantitative base points (related to number of questions asked) as well as performance driven extra and bonus rewards (eg. related to number of correct answers) and/or effort (eg. number of rounds played per day). Skill also offers long term reward in form of achievement ("Ninja Master") awarded individually at each operation difficulty level when threshold success rate (skill), number of questions and days practiced (endurance) has been met. Assessment of the achievement eligibility is part of the overall progress summary available at any point within the skill.
Premium Content
Skill offers medium and hard difficulty as premium available via in-skill product purchasing flow. Ginger Math implements all suggested monetization invocations ("What can I buy?", "I want to buy ...", "What did I buy?" and "I want to refund ..."). Further, as required for kids directed skills, implementation takes parental controls in consideration (Purchase by Voice, Kid Skill Purchasing and Purchases Require Approval) when offering or up-selling premium content.
