Inspiration
Gender norms are everywhere, built into everyday society, but not many females are shown when talking about breaking them. We wanted to create a platform that features unique women breaking gender norms through fashion and innovation, where people can be inspired and eventually share their own stories with the world as well - so we made Ging! We wanted to create a sort of project that could not only put effort into breaking those gender norms but also inspire and share stories with those around us. We all thought that Ging was a great way to empower women while also being able to share different forms of media (whether that be style, innovations, stories, or even just influencers we think are pretty neat)!
What it does
Ging is an app built off of python that shows you an almost magazine-style setup with different panels and media forms. A couple of our panels are featured influencers, style steals (outside of the "norms" for women's fashion), and quick snippets of what women across the world are making!
How we built it
We used the Python GUI Toolkit, Tkinter, and Figma to design and layout our application. A Figma-built UI was exported in parts to design the UI in the main code using Tkinter and Python.
Challenges we ran into
It was most of our first times using the software that we used for editing, coding, and GUI design, so it was quite difficult to quickly learn and adapt to everything we were using (there were a lot of Google searches done) and due to our familiarity, took us longer than expected to work through design flaws and errors. Specifically, transferring the UI from Figma to be integrated into the main code was a big struggle, but we eventually solved it by exporting and inserting the code through its individual elements being stacked on top of each other.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of our time management in this project. In about 24 hours, we designed a small application with a theme we're equally passionate about. Our team was able to design an aesthetically pleasing design, nicer to the eye than any widgets that basic tinkering with Tkinter could offer, while at the same time being backed with a powerful mission, and in our opinion, that's pretty cool! :)
What we learned
We definitely learned a lot of Tkinter and gained familiarity with a lot of new software including PyCharm, Github, and Figma. We also learned a lot more about what innovative ideas people are sharing throughout our research for our top innovative picks!
What's next for Ging
In the future, the other pages and features of Ging will be completed, which are as following:
- Liked (favorited) stories page
- Create and share your own story page (story builder to post on the platform)
- Shop option for fashion relating to our mission (breaking gender norms)
- going back to the share your own story: making Ging a social media type app that brings communities together through seeing each other's stories, with many of the features that ta social media app might have.
- Improving functionality so that we can display more media in panels with ease.
