Inspiration

We took inspiration from friends and family with accessibility needs who have been stressed about trying new places, wondering whether they meet their needs. Small details, such as low noise, lighting and wheelchair access, make a huge difference to customers. We wanted to create a space where people can find accessible places throughout the city, while designing the site to be readable, calm, and easy for everyone to use.

What it does

AccessifiED helps users find places based on features such as wheelchair access, low noise level, and ASL interpreters. Users can explore locations of businesses using the map feature, search using the filters and add other accessable business. The website is designed to accommodate different access needs, including low vision, dyslexia, and colour blindness.

How we built it

We built this website using HTML, JavaScript, and Supabase. Our team split the work into four areas: frontend, backend, data & content management, and the map interface. This allowed each of us to focus on specific features while keeping the site cohesive and accessible.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was mangaing mutiple team members editing the code at the same time. We also had trouble merging our individual branches into the main branch on GitHub.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating our first website and learning new coding languages.

What we learned

We learned how to collaborate on a team project, manage code with Git, and build a functional website. Most importantly, we learned to integrate the frontend, backend, database, and map into one website, while keeping accessibility front and center for users with low vision, dyslexia, or cognitive differences.

What's next for Gin&Tronic_AccessifiED

Our next steps are to expand our website to cities outside of Edmonton, making it easier for people in other cities to find accessible places.
